TKO: The Sheboygan Boxing Project
| For TKO: The Sheboygan Boxing Project (2006), my focus pivoted from boxing as a tool to critique violence in the abstract, to a concrete tool to counteract socially constructed violence such as class inequity, racism, and sexism on a personal and experiential level. For this project, I worked directly with the members of the Sheboygan (WI) Boxing Gym. Because of an accumulation of their various marginalized identities (race, class, education, youth, and in one case gender) none of the boxers embodied the traditional privileged masculinity I had expected to find. With my help, the boxers’ documentation of their gym produced a number of images that evoked a view of the gym that was alternately entirely mundane and fantastically transcendent. |
